Basil Wilson Duke (1838-1916) was an American soldier, lawyer, and author. He is known for his service as a Confederate general during the American Civil War. Born in Kentucky, Duke came from a prominent family and initially pursued a career in law. However, with the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army and quickly rose through the ranks.
Duke served under General John Hunt Morgan as one of his most trusted officers. He participated in numerous military campaigns and engagements, including the famous Morgan's Raid in 1863, which involved a daring Confederate cavalry raid through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.
